Twin Clutch Gearboxes 04/16/2010
Hello and welcome to my blog about twin clutch gearboxes. I'll start with a little bit about them and how they work. A twin clutch transmission gearbox has the fastest method of chnging gears out of any other type of gearbox. These gearboxes have much better control and deliver more power than a standard automatic gearbox and offer much faster perforamnce than a standard maual transmission. Originally used by the VW-Audi group, now they are commonly being used by manufacturers such as Nissan, Mitsubishi and BMW. You might be wondering what it would be like to drive with a twin clutch gearbox? Well, cars that posses a twin-clutch gearbox, do not have a clutch pedal. The gears are changed automatically. The twin clutch gearbox commonly has 3 drive modes. The being 'Drive'. When 'Drive' is enabled the gearbox acts like that of an automatic gearbox, the transmission shifts to higher gears early in order to minimize engine noise and maximize fuel economy. The second mode is Sport. Sport mode holds the lower gears longer so that the engine will keep in it's powerband. It also provides more aggressive downshifts with less pressure from the accelerator, and in some cars, engaging Sport mode also causes the car's accelerator pedal to be alot more reactive. The third mode is manual mode. Manual mode allows manual shifting but the shift lever is mounted on the steering wheel. When in manual mode, the clutch is still automatically operated, but the driver controls which gears are selected and when to select them. |
